Here are some steps...
Step 1: Questioning Personal Beliefs... What would be possible if we are willing to question the untested beliefs which have run our lives for so long? We can generate a tremendous amount of personal growth, if we are willing to question the notions we hold about certain subjects. Ourselves, in general. I have found rapid growth in my talents when I am open to the possibility that everything I hold as true around my limitations, may be based on half-baked notions, assumptions and lies.
In exploring human potential, often there is a gap between a person's potential and their belief of what is possible. Sometimes, lofty concepts previously out of reach of the general public becomes available to everyone. Example, take the movie "The Secret", for example. In this movie, we are introduced ideas telling us that much of our reality is a reflection of our focused attention.
Many ideas we believe are true are untested. In particular, situation knowledge. Situated knowledge is knowledge specific to a particular situation. Some methods of generating knowledge, such as trial and error, or learning from experience, tend to create highly situational knowledge. Situational knowledge is often embedded in language, culture, or traditions. Situational knowledge is often second hand information based on hearsay. Hearsay is any information that has not been personally verified by you personally. Personal knowledge is often poorly explored. Many beliefs we hold as true are poorly explored.
Example, What if you were cheated by a young man? Does this mean that all young men cannot be trusted? Of course not, however the human mind operates often in very strange ways around concepts or ideas. Unless we challenge beliefs, these unchallenged beliefs can run our lives. Why do we choose to accept these notions as truth or valid today?
Questioning beliefs can set you free. Example: Do you believe you can sing or speak beautifully? You may answer "no". What is your basis for this belief, what evidence do you have? "Well, I've tried before and not had much success, therefore I can't do it." We operate this way. I say to you, that if I can show you how to sing beautifully, you will automatically dump a ton of beliefs that you may have held as true for many years.
One simple tool is to ask yourself questions such as, is it true? Is it really true for me today, in this moment? How many personal beliefs have you accepted at face value from others, or from an experience 10 years before or even last summer?
Step 2: Beliefs vs. Awareness... Using your inquiry abilities in the present moment will get you a lot further, than referring to a belief, which is often a notion, held as a truth, which is based upon a previous experience...
